The first issue of the scientific and practical journal The Life of The Earth was published in 1961. In 1983 the Journal was classified as annual periodical publication (ISSN 0514-7468). By 2015 there had been 37 issues of The Life of The Earth that witnessed that the Journal appeared intermittently due to unstable situation in the life of the country, its museums and higher education institutions.
Since 2016 the Journal has been published regularly and appears four times a year. Articles are published in Russian with detailed abstracts in English. There are also transliterated and translated lists of references. It is possible to publish English language articles with detailed abstracts in Russian. Each issue consists of about 120 pages.
The Journal publishes the results of scientific research and museum and methodological work both of the Earth Sciences Museum stuff and of subject-matter faculties of MSU, university based and other museums. In a larger sense, the Journal carries on the traditions of the Earth Sciences Journal issued by the Department of Geography at the Society of Devotees of Natural Science, Anthropology, and Ethnography from 1894 to 1917. The Life of The Earth is prepared in close cooperation with the Euroasian Universities Association (EUA).
Topics covered in the Journal include interaction of geospheres, natural science museology, museum education and history of science. The Journal is committed to publishing significant, high-quality research across the entire spectrum of the Earth Sciences along with reviews of relevant books and art events. The Journal ’s contents reflects all the disciplines within the geosciences as well as certain issues within humanities and aims to apply the results of these researches in definite educational programs, which are created by the stuff of university museums. Among the burning issues of the Journal there are problems of museum exposition modernization based on fundamental results obtained and ways of popularization of the main museum events.
The Life of The Earth publishes scientific articles related to the following groups of scientific sections: 03.00.00 — history, historical sciences; 13.51.00 — museum education, museology; 14.00.00 — public education, pedagogy; 38.00.00 — geology; 87.00.00 — environmental safety, human ecology.
The Life of the Earth Journal serves students and scientists in the related fields (geology, geography, ecology, history, museology, pedagogy) and the wider public.
The Journal was founded by Lomonosov Moscow State University and LMSU based Earth Sciences Museum and is issued by the University printing house. The issues are prepared for publishing in the LMSU Earth Sciences Museum. The Editorial Board includes leading Russian and international specialists. Article publication is free of charge.
The Journal is registered in the Russian Science Citation Index (РИНЦ) system and in the union catalogue „Press of Russia” („Пресса России”) (index: 39904).
