Reflecting the history of the creation of shelterbelts in the steppe zonein the exposition of the Earth Science Museum of MSU

This article reconstructs the history of the creation of shelterbelts depicted in I.A. Popov’s painting “The Dokuchaev Institute in the Kamennaya Steppe” in the exhibition hall “Forest-steppe, steppe, and semi-desert” of the MSU Earth Science Museum. The shelterbelt numbers, year of their establishment, and project authors have been determined. The functions and types of the shelterbelts, their impact on crop yields, wind speed, soil erosion, gully formation, and other factors are considered. Modern statistical tools for recording the creation of shelterbelts in Russia are examined. The role of landscape paintings in the exhibition of the MSU Earth Science Museum as an effective means of popularizing rational nature management methods and raising environmental awareness is demonstrated. Recommendations are given for expanding the exhibition in Hall No. 19 “Forest-steppe, steppe, and semi-desert” of the MSU Earth Science Museum.
