A life-long photo essay: about the artist Zakhar Z. Vinogradov’s work

Based on archival sources and journalistic materials, the article highlights the activities of the outstanding Russian photographer Zakhar Z. Vinogradov (1882–1963), a photographer and geographer, the founder of Soviet scientific and geographical photography. Despite his active creative and professional activities, his name now is known only to a narrow circle of researchers. Z.Z. Vinogradov was a real man of the twentieth century, his fate reflecting the global events of the century, namely: the First World War, the Great October Revolution, the Civil War, the construction of socialism, the Great Patriotic War, the restoration of the country, and all his work reflected these life milestones. The article presents unique photographs of 1928–1932 from the photo archive of the N.N. Miklouho-Maclay Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. They were made by Z.Z. Vinogradov in small towns and villages of central Russia and illustrate the panorama of the country’s life in that period, reflect the specifics of the way of life of Russian citizens, the transformations of the era of the first five-year plan of the Soviet state.
