Cylindrical polygonal bioinert bodies from the Upper Cretaceous and Paleocene in the Middle and Lower Volga region

Macroscopic formations (up to one meter in length and up to several decimeters in diameter) of cylindrical polygonal shape were found in sections of the Upper Cretaceous (Santonian, Campanian) and Paleocene (Syzran Formation) of the Volga region, they are oriented in various directions within the layer and occurring as displaced fragments. The host sediments consist of rhythmically bedded sequences of marly siliceous or siltstone clay siliceous composition. A concentrically zonal structure is observed in cross section of the bodies – the presence of a silicified cylindrical core bordered by a belt of ring shaped brecciation areas and the development of slip surface systems. Manifestations of opaline mineralization and zonal iron deposition are characteristic. The objects are considered in the context of the evolution of the geoecosystems that include them, as a product of the interaction of sedimentation processes, fluid transport, and the activity of living matter in zones with an active geodynamic history. The results of studying the bodies make it possible to refine the regional history of geoecosystems and also provide new data for the development of the nonlinear fluidodynamic concept of the geological layer (shell).
