This article examines the scientific activities carried out at the Nikolskoye-Obolyaninovo estate (from the 18th to early 20th centuries – the estate of Counts Olsufievs, located 50 km north of Moscow). The focus is on the preparations for a hot air balloon flight to observe the solar eclipse on August 7, 1887, involving Dmitry I. Mendeleyev. Nikolskoye-Obolyaninovo was a center for prominent figures of Russian culture and science – scientists, artists, philosophers, and writers were visiting the estate. Its extensive library was always open to the numerous guests of this hospitable house. In particular, the world-famous writer and a friend of the Olsufievs family, Count Leo Tolstoy, often worked there. The letter of August 7, 1887, by Tatyana L. Tolstoy, the eldest daughter of Leo Tolstoy, is published in full for the first time. Therein, she informs her mother, Sofia Tolstoy, about the preparatory work and observation of the solar eclipse at the estate.
