The purpose of this study was to investigate the vertical hydrogeological zoning of sedimentary basins in relation to the localization of hydrocarbon accumulations in their sections. This problem was examined using the well-studied South Mangyshlak oil-and-gas-bearing sedimentary basin as an example. The work is based on an extensive base of initial data, which contains the results of testing and chemical analyses of hundreds of hydrogeological wells; more than 1000 exploration, prospecting, and evaluation wells in the fields and structures of Southern Mangyshlak. The study conducted indicates that the following hydrogeological systems can be identified in the underground hydrosphere of oil-and-gas-bearing sedimentary basins (from bottom to top): 1) a thermohydration system of superheated waters, sub- and supercritical gas mixtures and fluids; 2) a hydrogeological system of high-pressure elision waters; 3) a hydrogeological water-pressure system of artesian waters; and 4) a hydrogeological system of groundwater of Neogene-Quaternary deposits. The hydrogeological conditions of different systems are determined by the nature of the fluid conductivity of the section with the prevailing role of the vertical component associated with the intrusion of high-energy deep fluids into the upper horizons of the earth's crust. The hydrogeological zoning of the subsurface of the sedimentary basin is closely related to the zoning of the processes of oil and gas generation, migration, and accumulation: the thermohydration system is identified with the zone of probable generation, the elision system is with the zone of accumulation and conservation, and the infiltration system is with the zone of non-conservation.
