The article is devoted to the evolution and prospects of digitalization of museum collections, which represents a profound transformation of methodologies for working with cultural heritage. The process is considered in historical retrospect, starting from the first steps in the 1960s, when computers were used to automate accounting, through the stage associated with the advent of the Internet and the first domestic automated systems, to the modern period, when museums began to actively explore the virtual space. The article analyzes in detail the key prospects and problems of further digitalization, namely: the need to develop unified metadata standards, create AI-based search systems, develop interactive formats for presenting collections (3D models, virtual tours) and ensure digital data security. The practical experience of the Earth Science Museum (Moscow State University) is considered separately, which has gone from the Paradox and Access databases to the transition to the KAMIS professional system, due, among other things, to the requirements of the new legislation on entering information into the State Catalogue of the Museum Fund of Russian Federation.
